Compression test problem

I have a 2000 Johnson J225vxsss engine I'm trying to run a compression test on. Using the ignition switch I can only get engine to turn over 3 revs before starter kicks out. After that it will only crank one revolution, kicking starter out. Don't know why or how to proceed.

That's a common problem with some of the loop charged engines.

The cure is to have all of the spark plugs installed excepting the cylinder you're testing. I encountered that problem back in 1987.

Yes, I know that's a PITA but it works for me.
