Hi everyone,
So I just bought an old evinrude 6hp outboard. Well that's what I think it is, the ID badge is missing there's a nice clean rectangle where it once was. But I got this number off the engine block, 387719D1 and according to this forum post http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/info-wanted-evinrude-6-hp-83387.html that means its model and serial numbers are , Model: 69B66E
Serial: B037824. Again i don't know if this is right I haven't been able to open it up and have a look at the model numbers yet. Like i said I'm a complete beginner this is my first outboard so I have a few question hopefully someone can help. Thanks in advance.
There's a number of problems with the motor. First of all the rewind starter is missing and it looks like the previous owner put a ignition key in the hole where the starter rope once was. Is it possible to start the engine without the rewind starter by wrapping the rope are the fly wheel? I've seen it done on youtube.
There's this hole on the side of the engine casing
and I don't know what it's for. I havent been able to find it in any pictures of a 79 evinrude and only one of a 78 evinrude and not others.
There's this cable coming from underneath the flywheel and I can't figure out where its meant to go.

Here's some more photos of the engine to help identify it. Thanks again for your help
