Compatible engine years/HP

I have a pontoon boat with a 1999 Johnson 50HP (J50PLEEA). I need to replace the engine due to extensive electrical damage, preferably with a 50 to 70 HP engine. What years/sizes of engine would be plug-and-play with the existing binnacle controls on the boat? Anything before 1999, or does it need to be in the 1999 to 2001 range?

Any 96 & newer. Electrical harness is different earlier but if get controls with engine you can go back as far as you want.

There may be an adapter cable that allows you to install motors from before 1996.
