I have a 85ESL73M 85HP johnson coils on stator are bad. Can I just buy the 2 coils or do I need to buy whole stator with coils? THANK YOU JERRY

Re: coils on stator

Yep..... Although it is easy to remove those two coils, as Haffiman states, the stator can only be purchased as a unit.

As a side comment.
Living in a country 'under development' where people are still waiting for the coco nuts to fall down and not rushing to the supermarket to buy them, we have some advantages.
Got a couple of Yamaha charging coils re-winded at my local shop the other day:
Cost: 5 USD!
That included a cop of coffee while waiting.

Re: coils on stator

Keep us informed after six months or a year as to how those repaired rewired coils work out.

Re: coils on stator

Rewinding itself is not the biggest problem, that is to get the correct wire.
As long as open coil and no epoxy coating it seems to work.
It is these kind of shops that keeps the local fishermen moving, they can't afford the original parts, and they do not mind a 'cup of coffee' now and then.
The knowledge and willingness to do this kind of work is unfortunately lost in the developed world.
There are too few mechanics left, but a lot of 'spare part exchangers'.

Re: coils on stator

I also live in a spot like that. They get by with very little in the way of parts, tools, test equipment etc.. Rewinding of everything is normal, sometimes on a bench under a mango tree. They range from windscreen wiper motors and motor cycle ignition parts to 100kva generator ends for ships and megayachts. They usually work but of course they don't have the real insulating materials and impregnation like some of the quality marine parts.
This coil job would be an easy one as this one has little or no finishing and very little wire.

Re: coils on stator

Is it posible to get a used stator? If so could any of you give me some names to lead me in the right direction? It would be for a 85ESL73M 85HP Johnson Thank You Jerry

Re: coils on stator

I can picture myself under a mango tree by the ocean working on engines.
Wish I was there now.

Re: coils on stator

So I take it that there is not any place that I could get A used stator for the 85HP johnson , none out there any where?

Re: coils on stator

There should be plenty of good used stators out there somewhere. Just make sure that you're looking for the type that DOES NOT have the two large black coils visible. You would want the later model type that has the coils completely encased in green epoxy. The part number of the stator is 581225.

Check on this site first for that stator, then if you wish, make a search on Google and eBay, etc.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:
