"I have an 88 5.7 king cobra I have replaced the ingnition switch and installed a new battery and coil, the boat will stay runing even with the switch off?? I have put 2 new coils I thought that I had found where the coil was being grounded out( steal braided oil line hose was laying against it) this fix the problem for a while but the problem has retured any suggestions?"

""the boat will stay runing even with the switch off?"
Do you mean it's like you never turned it off, or is it "dieseling" or "after running"?
If it's dieseling, two possible causes are idle speed is too fast and ignition timing is off."

"The braided line might have been resting against the side of the coil but if it was shorting out you would never have started it or run it.

See the purple wire (looks like Blue in the diagram) coming off the A terminal of the key switch, you need to check that line with a meter or test light, it should be zero volts when the key is turned off which ultimately kills power to the resistor wire and coil."

"The boat will stay running just as if the key ahd never been shut off.
Bob, If I test the purple wire and don`t get a zero reading what is the next step? Everytime I have replaced the coil it fixes the problem for awhile is it possible that the coils I am getting are bad? I have been all over the n=moter looking for bad connections and have been uable to find any should I look at replaceing the purple wire from the switch to the coil?"

If it's not zero then I wo

If it's not zero then I would be suspecting the the key switch itself or possibly loose wires that are touching (shorting out) on the back of the switch.

I have replaced the key switch

I have replaced the key switch with a new one and checked form loose wires on the switch. Do I need to trace the wire all the way to the main connector?

"I would start with measuring

"I would start with measuring voltage at the coil, if it's still there after turning the key off then you need to trace that back to see where the problem is. Using the link above to the wiring diagram (or a manual if you have one), go back to the splice just before the alternator?"

Ok thanks Bob I figured it was

Ok thanks Bob I figured it was a bad wire I have looked them all over and can`t see any problems outside the factory wrap that is on the wiring.
