Coil cracks every year on 2000 5.0L 2BBL

2000 Mercrusier 5.0L 2BBL approx 150 hours. I changed the original coil in 2007 because I found corrison on it. Every year since then, including 3 days ago, the new coil cracks starting where the plug wire goes in extending to the positive side and then shorts out. (Zig zag style crack) I get about 1 year from the new coil.

I buy a Mercrusier coil each time, except for one Mallory coil, with same result. The coil is always returned to the stock position. (Rear of engine near the distributor). I did notice this time the coil was hot when I changed it on the water when it failed. I started carrying a spare. Very quick change out. No modifications to ignition or engine. (Thunderbolt ignition).

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

a few things that can make a coil hot to the point of cracking: location (heat soak), hot engine, crappy plug wires, crappy spark plugs or too much gap, incorrect supply voltage (alternator running too high of a V), goofy tachometer

Has the original wires, plugs changed a few years back with OEM AC plugs. (MR43LTS) I made sure they were gapped to specs before installation. However my tachometer has acted goofy for a few years. It stopped working, took it out, played with the needle, and it works now, but not smoothly.

Going to get my volt meter and check the other possible issues too.

Have a Seloc manual... going to order a Factory Manual very soon.

Thanks for guidance! I will let you know outcome.
