"Hi, i have a 1989 bayliner ciera sunbridge with a 5.8 coupled to a omc cobra outdrive, can any one tell me if its possible to swop the outdrive to a volvo sx and bolt it to the existing gimble housing,i know i will need to fit a water pump to the engine but will there be any other issues ?"

"Thanks bob,still might fix the old drive if possible,its eaten the bottom gears,cant quite figure it out its thrown some of the oil into the gimble uj joint plus out of the exhaust and when i drained the oil it came out under a lot of presure and the oil smelled really bad,"

"Usually the bad smell means the oil hasn't been changed for a while. To get the oil into the u-joint bellows means that seal is gone on the shaft, if the gears are gone as well plus (who knows what else) maybe best to look around for a rebuilt unit?"

The oil as only been in the drive for 3 months and used for about 20 hours, but i used EP80w/90 GL4 auto oil (Non marine) think i made a big mistake here,
Whats puzzling me is why did the oil drain out under high pressure the smell is so bad its still lingering after three days, and i have noticed its blown through all the seals its even in the exhaust part of the drive.does the drive have any vent anywere.

"No there is no vent (until you crack one of the screws open), the oil is not supposed to build up pressure in there and that could be related to the type of lube you put in, I'm not surprised it's pushed out past the seals. I always use the OMC Hi-Vis if you can find it or the Hi-Perf stuff and then the Merc Hi-Po lube."
