"I have an 89 Bayliner with a 5.0 liter engine and a Cobra outdrive, #985687. I tore up the gears on the upper unit last summer. I found a complete drive for $100 with a bad lower unit, #984540 out of a boat with a 2.3 liter engine. Will this outdrive work on my boat or should I sell it as a core?"

"Is it a different ratio then? I looked at reman units on Sterndrive.info and they list the same drive for the 2.3 through the 5.7. If the teeth on the gears count the same, will it work or is there other differences?

"Where are you finding the upp

"Where are you finding the upper gears for $350? Are they hard to replace? I'm a Ford tech but don't do transmissions or gears. If possible, I'd like to just replace the gears but the only one's I've found are $650-ish."
