"Hi, I'm new here, I searched old threads for a couple of hours and haven't found a solution to my problem so here goes. I recently bought a 1991 DT55 and it won't stay in forward gear. I can grab the prop by hand and easily make the clutch dogs slip. The shift cables were recently replaced before I bought it and may have been improperly adjusted. I don't think anyone has been into the gearcase to screw with stuff because the bolts were a bugger to remove. The shift cam looks to be in good shape without much wear, by the looks of the design I think the shift cam could be missing and it would still be in forward gear. The clutch dogs are slightly rounded but less than 1/16". The dogs on the forward gear look good, they must be harder than the clutch. It looks like the clutch dog was never engaging more than 1/16", is that normal? Will replacing the clutch permanently cure the problem or with the dogs engaging so litle will it happen again? Am I missing something? What else should I check? I can't see anyplace where shims could be adjusted to make it work better. The only thing I can see that would make the dogs engage better would be to shorten the piece that rides against the shift cam but that would lessen the amount that the reverse dogs engaged. I feel that I am missing something simple. Thanks, Dale"

"I couldn't see anywhere to adjust the shift shaft. With the lower unit removed and the shift shaft pushed all the way down, the dogs barely engage. I'll look at it again tomorrow. Thanks"

I looked at it again and I think you are right the shift shaft needs to be adjusted downward. How do I do that? I can't find any reference to it in my clymer manual.
