Clutch Dog Broke

I just purchased a new clutch dog for my 1985 Evinrude 60hp. and noticed that the splines run all the way to the end of the cog on one end but not the other. This gave me the idea that their might be a direction. Since that stump broke my old one into many many pieces I don't have a clue as to what direction it was nor do I know if their is an actual direction. Will someone help me please? Thanks in advance!

???I don't understand. You are saying the splines don't go all the way through the new clutch dog? How can it slide all the way onto the splined portion of the prop shaft? Anyhow, for whatever it is worth, clutch dogs often have a circular groove around one end---the forward gear end.

Yes it is as racerone said. They slide over the splines. As you said their is a small grove cut around one end. The end that the splines have been removed. Which happens to be the thinner weaker portion of the clutch that locks into the fordward gear that produces the most thurst and handles the most hp. Makes no sence to me.It has only been working for 31 yr.

Maybe I will check a manual later today.-----------------Those lower units are not considered " robust " by any means.-------------The clutch dog needs to be installed the correct way !!

I have not received all the parts that I have ordered.Their is no rush on my part.
Whenever you have a chance to check a manual would be greately appreciated.

O.K. I have my answer. Their is a "E" stamped on one end that goes toward the Prop. That makes fdrgator correct about the circle thats on the other end going toward the fordward gear. Thank you gentlemen! I appreciate your help.
