90hp Johnson (1986). Today I ran into mud and am getting warning alarm despite flushing engine with garden hose. Is there an easy way to clear or check for obstructions?

"remove lower unit and connect

"remove lower unit and connect garden hose directly to water intake tube/inspect water pump while apart.remove thermostat cover and clean out manualy.other than that you can remove the heads and clear them that way ,but its costly."

"Remove lower unit, dismantle

"Remove lower unit, dismantle water pump, clean and repair as needed.

Remove water hoses leading from cylinder heads to thermostat housing. Flush with garden hose into cylinder head fittings, thermostat housing, and into water pump copper water tube.

No easy short cuts. Let us know how you make out."

"Thanks for the prompt advice

"Thanks for the prompt advice to this novice. I removed lower unit, dismantled water pump, and found only minor deposits of sand and grit.
But upon re-assembly, motor still ran hot.
Next step is to replace thermostats, which are very hard top get to, at bottom of lower assy. cylinder head hoses removal sounds difficult for me. I will let you know, thanks again"
