Clicking noise when I turn propeller

I have 1986 35hp mercury 2stroke. I changed out the water pump propeller bolted everything back up and now the boat propeller clicks when I rotate it. I can't get the throttle to go in forward or reverse. Cranked it and the propeller spins in neutral. Did I put something back together wrong? Thanks in advance.

You need to pull it back off and do it again. Even the experienced mechanic dont normally get it right the first time. First off check you have the impeller installed properly pull the cover and spin the driveshaft clockwise only if the fins are not going in the right direction it will not work properly. Just put a small squirt of dish soap on the impeller as you spin the driveshaft clockwise only. Pull the spark plugs so you can rotate the flywheel easy allways only turn in the clockwise rotation. Shift the gearbox in neutral the prop should spin easy in both directions. Never spin the driveshaft with the prop. Put the motor in neutral after you disconnect the shift cable. Then carefully install the gearbox and spin the flywheel clockwise to line up the driveshaft splines and wiggle the shift lever to line up the shift splines. Once all the way up put a nut on to hold it in place and test the shifter. You must spin the prop to shift into reverse and the prop should lock in both directions then shift into forward and the prop should ratchet in one direction and lock in the other. Once again do not turn the engine over with the prop. If you flip one of the fins on the impeller backwards you will need to do it again. Just take your time I allways try and do it in neutral first with good success. It is a challenge getting everything all lined up together water tube, driveshaft, shift shaft, reverse lock and bolt holes. Just make sure the gearbox is in the same gear as the engine.

Thanks for the reply. Took it apart and got it back together. I had to turn the gear shaft and it clicked so now the propeller turns without clicking. But I can't get it to go into gear, forward or reverse.

If it worked before you took it apart just keep trying with different gears you just need the right combo of events. Pain in the ass but most everyone goes through it.

Grab the lower shift shaft with a good pair of vice grips and wrap the splines with a rag strip so you dont damage the splines and turn the propshaft as you change gears. Dont let the driveshaft spin but if it ratchets in one direction it is in forward gear, prop spins free is neutral and if it locks in both directions it is in reverse.

Did the lower shift shaft in the gearbox lift up when you pulled the gearbox? I have seen the C clip that holds the shiftshaft in the gearbox break apart from rust and the shaft gets pulled out of the shift cam inside the gearbox. If you can lift the shift shaft up you need to pull the bushing and get a new one with a new C clip. Then clean the shaft up good and install the new C clip and install it into the cam down in the gearbox and put the new bushing on and tighten it good.
