"I have a 1979 sea king that hasnt been used in 2o plus years. It has a little rust and dirt build up in the on-board tank, any suggestions on the best way to clean this. I can remove the tank no problem. There is also a small filter in the tank on the other end of gas line nipple, is it possible to still get one of these."

"Phil, best to remove the tank

"Phil, best to remove the tank, empty anything that is in it and let it dry out well.

Then you can use a shopvac (or similar) to suck out any loose debris etc.

With the tank as clean as you can get it you could try one of the many gas tank sealing/restoring products available at most auto parts places (if it's a metal tank).

Different guys have used these with varying degrees of success - depending on how bad the tank is in the first place.

If you can't get a good, sealed finish on the inside of the tank (if it needs it), then it's best to replace it."

"hey, i just had to deal with

"hey, i just had to deal with the same problem on a ted william 7.5hp gas tank, the inside was so rusty... i took the gas tank out, i shook it real good, vacumed it, then i went to the Dollar Tree and got a bag of small stones (rocks) that u use in a fish tank (not the smooth ones though), and baking soda.
i put the rocks inside the tank, i added some tab water and i closed the cap, i shook it and shook it aaaand shook it, then i let the water go (man and was it filthy?)..
i repeated the same thing till i got clear water after shaking it with the rocks inside the tank..
then i heated some water (a galon) and mixed it with baking soda and put it in the tank (the rocks still inside), i waited couple hours then i poured some of the water out, and i started the shaking proccess (u'll notice that the water is red first means that the baking soda did the job), continue the shaking and rinsing untill u get clear water, then empty it completely from the rocks, then dry really good, (i used hair air dryer). then put some gas and/or oil and shake it to film cover the inside, and ur baby gas tank is good to go."
