Clasic 50 Serial # Location

I have an '88, so says the PO, 45 hp Mercury Classic 50. I cannot find a serial number for the engine. Where should it be located? Is it also stamped on the block somewhere?

I still have this question, can anyone answer it? I am sure the serial number is stamped on the block somewhere. The serial number plate on the swivel is long gone.

There may be a welch plug with the serial number on it somewhere on the block, Here's an example for you.

Yes, I found it this afternoon. It is on the right side aft of the starter. Mine is stamped B368471. I do a search on the parts sites and it doesn't come up, but I am sure that is the serial number I have been looking for. Thanks for your response.
