Clanking sound when shifting gears

2005 Mercruiser alpha 1 drive. Is it normal to hear a mild clanking (sounds like metal to metal) when shifting gears. This occurs when shifting from Neutral to forward as well as neutral to reverse.

Yes but only if your shifting to slow.
When shifting into gear it needs to be done quick. The longer it takes the more the gears are grinding

Yes
While even more so in the water, but on lane also doing it briskly is best
