Chrysler Tote Tank Cap Vent

Hi,

New to the forum, so first a "hello" to all.

I just bought a very nice barely used 1979 chrysler 7.5 motor. It seems a great little motor and very light too, perfect for my inflatable boat. The motor came with a very nice Tote tank in great condition other than it seems the lens from the fuel gauge has long since disintegrated and gone missing. I have a couple of ideas as to how to fix this, but where is this tank vented, if it is? Gas can escape up through the hole for the needle pointer with no glass, was it just designed that the lens kept the fuel in? - I don't want to embark on a fix that will cause me a problem when I take it on the water - any help greatly appreciated.

OK, I since found a picture of an "un-molested" tank and its vent is attached to the glass window. As the glass disintegrating with time seems such a common problem, are there any known fixes/modifications to avoid fuel spillage and being gassed by fumes?

They make no repair parts for most older tanks.
I went looking recently and even contacted the company.
Moeller was sold to Tempo or vice versa.
Metal tanks are hard to find parts too.
They said nothing was available.
Now if it's a Mercury tank they might be able to get the parts.
But you'll never get boating so just buy a new tank..

The price of marine stuff, tanks, hoses, squeezie bulbs went up 300% in the last year.

It seems the tank hoses were already replaced as they are marked as alcohol resistant. I'd noticed the increase in prices on all fuel related items, because having purchased the motor, what I thought it would cost to replace these bits, based on last time I looked was very different from what they cost now. If I dispense with having a gauge, I have a fix in mind, I'm still working on an idea where I keep the working gauge. If I go for a new one, I'm thinking of getting something smaller than a 6 gallon tank. If find a suitable solution I will certainly post here to update others.

Luckily I have a gas station near me that sells gas with no added ethanol, I use this in all my boats, outboard motors. motorcycles generators etc. - everything except my daily drivers. This link may help you find one in your area http://pure-gas.org/ I've found the higher cost offset by better gas mileage, overall running and peace of mind that rubber parts are not dissolving and there's less chance of suffering corrosion damage due to water build up.
