chnger lower unit 1982 johnson

Need some help please. I have a 1982 35hp johnson seahorse. Water pump is not pumping water. I have the lower unit down coupler is loose but can't get the lower unit off the motor. Can anyone get me going in the right direction please. Thanks in advance

Set the hammer aside for now.---------Did you slide the upper nut for the coupler up the shift rod ?--------Sometimes the paint has to be scraped off to do that.-----Then you will find a wee plastic keeper on the bottom of that shift rod.-------That black plastic keeper is split and must be removed.
