Hey guys need some help with a carb. i bought a 1972 VIP Tri-Hull from a buddy of mine and the carb on the inline Chevy 6-cylinder pretty much needs to be replaced. I've looked around and found the carb online for about $350, and i would love not to spend that much. Any recomendations on a cheap carb that will work great on my boat?

I'd Recommend sending the Carb to a pro and rebuilding it.

I was close to getting a 4bbl Webber and 4bbl Quadrajet working ( from Big Merc 4 cyl engines and V6 Merc's ) working on that engine the 292ci 200HP Inline 6 had a 4bbl Carb but good luck finding one of those.. Where I didn't get to finish testing with was on the adapter plate under the 2bbl Carb is a Diverter or Air Flow Disrupter of sorts, I was able to get the 4bbls to work at idle to mid throttle but with issues as I didn't have the diverter installed.. I fabricated a 1" thick alum plate and just needed to remove the divert from the old plate and Install on the New Plate but had to sell the boat. I'm sure it would've worked. Good Luck.

Ok, thanks for the reply. This one has a Rochester 2 Jet Carb on it and what i was wanting to know was another carb that i could put on it besides the old Rochester. I was thinking along the lines of maybe a Holly but just not sure witch one would be best for that old of a motor.

the Rochester is the standard 2 barrel for those. No sense changing to something exotic and having to re-invent the linkages. I second rebuilding. I got an online one(seller "i5" eBay) once and although the build quality was excellent, it was jetted all wrong and never worked right as a result.
Had my original rebuilt and it has been great.

thanks hystat, i was leaning towards that myself. it's on an old mid to early '70's modle VIP and it's in great shape for it's age and with it being left out in the weather for the past 4 or 5 years, just wasn't too sure about the carb if it would have been a better idea to replace it or have it either rebuilt by me or have it professionally rebuilt (i'm thinking more like professionally). you wouldn't happen to know where i can get a rebuild kit for it at a cheaper price than an autoparts store would you?

call cliff ... number at cliffshighperformance dot com. he's been doing rochester's for years and understands what "marine" means...in addition, he uses high quality parts, many custom made for him...only drawback - wait time...
