checking rpms with a dwell meter

I have a Craftsmen engine analyzer and want to check the engine rpms. I do not think the tach is reading correctly. Is it as simple as plugging the correct lead into the rpm socket on the meter and attach the other end to number one spark plug? It's been so long I can not remember.

Any idea which plug is number one on a Volvo Penta 4.3GL-A?

1.... If this tool operates in an RPM mode, it should work for you.

2.... I guess that you have not read the Chrysler forum thread on locating number 1 cylinder! :) ;) :D

Basically, #1 cylinder will be the furthest cylinder forward on the crankshaft.
On a 4.3L, it will the FWD-most Port side cylinder.

The first several images will not show this, but #1 sits forward of #2.

NOTE: the crab style distributor cap numbering can be confusing when determine firing order in the CW direction from #1.

Rick thank you for your reply.
Sorry I missed the info on the Chrysler forum. I'll have to take a look and see what else I can learn.
The dwell meter does have a RPM scale but the directions were not very clear for using it. Thanks again.

use the rpm pickup, you can just clip it to any spark plug wire, doesn't have to be #1 if all you want to do is verify rpm.
use the rpm channel and inductive pickup (blue plug), not dwell

I hooked it up using the proper cable (blue connector on one end and a clip looking thing on the other, inductive pickup I'm guessing). plugged it into the blue rpm spot, hooked it on #1 plug wire and selected RPM --- nothing happened.

But I think I am ok -- took the boat out and the RPM guage was working ok - go figure!
