1998 Evinrude 175 FICHT, Do I add gear case lube through the vent/level plug or the drain/fill plug? The manual I purchased is misleading.

You put oil in via the drain plug hole till it comes out the top hole.----The only way to make sure all the air is out.

You can buy the Shoreline lower unit pump just about anywhere that carries marine stuff. I got mine at Walmart but you can get them online like the link below.

It goes on top your bottle of gear lube and threads into the lower drain hole of the LU. Pump until the lube comes out the top hole. install the top plug then remove the pump from the drain hole and quickly install the bottom plug. You will lose a little of lube putting the plug in, which is no big deal. While you're at it, be sure to replace the nylon washers on both plugs. Old, worn plugs can be a source of water intrusion.

Here is a nice video describing the process: https://youtu.be/YVlBtOzLYRE

You can use the Mercruiser lube specified for high HP applications. I prefer to use the OEM spec HPF Pro lube.
