"I have a 1984 Mariner outboar

"I have a 1984 Mariner outboard, 90 HP, inline 6 cyl. The charging system pegged my volt meter at 16 volts and burned up everything that was turned on. I replaced the regulator/rectifier. Now the voltage output is around 13 volts at engine idle, but will spike the volt meter at 16 volts with any increase in engine rpms. From the diagram I have of the charging system only the stator and regulator/rectifier exist. Can the stator make the charging output react this way? Does any one know of a system test that I should do?
Thanks for the review,
CWH"

Test the stator with an ohm me

Test the stator with an ohm meter according to your manual. Also be sure you are using a marine battery and not a car battery. All connections must be clean and tight.
