charging system on 2004 60 hp 4 stroke big foot not keeping battery charged what to look for

You have 4 choices of why. Could be issue with stator or issue with voltage regulator. Or you have a defective battery . Or poor connections.

Check fuse at voltage regulator , only if 1 exists. Otherwise check for battery voltage at red wire of voltage regulator engine off. Do you have a dva meter ? With a dva you can check high voltage output from stator while it's running. There are 2 or 3 yellow wires coming from the stator. With dva you check high voltage from each wire red wire of dva goes to each wire. Black goes to ground of engine. . You need to disconnect yellow wires from the circuit. To test individually. Output reading should be close to or around 200v. But output should be same for all yellow wires. . You will need a diode tester on any regular meter to test the voltage regulator. With the combination of the yellow wires . Connect red to one yellow wire and black to other yellowwire, meter will read 0 for continuity and nothing for no continuity. Switch the leads and you will have opposite of your first reading. If you switch leads and are getting same results, that diode is dead in the circuit and the regulator needs to be replaced.
