Charging problem

150 Mercury saltwater series was not charging batteries on last trip. Motor died 200 m from ramp on the way home. Any idea what it could be and why would the motor stop once it was running.

Serial number - 2 stroke or 4 stroke - EFI or Carb. Model matters, could be more than one issue.

To start with though if it's not charging the battery that could be a bad rectifier/regulator (or bad wiring or a blown fuse).

Along with a toasted regulator it's possible it also took out the stator (if so equipped) which is what produces power for the sparkplugs (on models so equipped).

So once we have info on exactly what motor you have, you will get more specific responses as to "what" to troubleshoot first.

If you are not charging and your batt. gets below a certain voltage your motor will not run. rebuilt my optimax alternator for around 75$. If the stator is good (most likely ) regulator rectifier asembly should be replaced.

Thanks. Will meter it tomorrow to see why it's not charging. Looks like both batteries may be had it now. Not charging on the charger at home. May be from being drained completely !

If you can fully charge both batteries overnight have them load tested at auto parts store for free. If batteries are in the neighborhood of 4-6 years they might be shot! do not buy maintenance free batteries,Replace with old school car batteries for longevity! Have stator checked and follow post#5

Thanks everyone for your help. Batteries checked out good. Alternator working good. No charge getting to the batteries. Regulator gone.
