Charging output on Johnson

I have a 1984 Johnson 8hp Seahorse and the other day the wiring that comes out of the front of the motor and connects to the battery for charging became tangled a got fried. I checked to see if there was any output and there is none. The wiring connects to the rectifier..to the red lead. Is it reasonable to suppose that the short caused the rectifier to burn out? The motor still runs so my guess is that only a portion of the rectifier is bad. Any help with this would be appreciated.

The motor does NOT need the rectifier in order to run.---------It is only for charging the battery !!--------------Likely fried the rectifier and new one is a reasonable cost.

If mine i would look at the stator also. a shorted r/r can also hurt the stator that feeds it. often times they (stators) will shed varnish under the flywheel .
