Further, the only engines you can attach to your current bellhousing are 4 and 6 cylinder inline VP AQs (ie, AQ125, AQ130, AQ150, AQ151, etc). However, you would be underpowered and you still will have to change the gears in the lower unit if you decided to go for a 4 cylinder engine. In any case, you should be aware that trying to adapt an engine to your current outdrive is opening a can of worms and I am 100% convinced that you will regret it down the road.

Again: if you like your boat and want to keep it, your best bet is to get a complete AQ package with a 275 or a 280 drive and a V6 or V8 engine. I apologize if you don't like my answer, but I don't think you have other alternatives that would make financial sense."

"Verify this, but I believe that the V/P in-line 6 and OHC 4 cylinder engines share the same Flywheel Cover pattern (bell housing in the auto world).
What does change is the over-all drive ratio.
The 6 was the 1.89:1 and the 4 is a 2.15:1 ratio.
As little difference as that may seem, we can't adequately substitute one for the other.
Only the lower unit is involved in a ratio change.
You will need to use the appropriate exhaust down tube for the engine that you choose.

Now, if you were to use the 4.3 V-6, you run into a transom shield issue.
The 6 and 4 cylinder shields are a single exhaust relief shield.
I've done this before and made it work with 3" exhaust using the AQ 200B Y pipe.
All else pretty much interchanges w/ exception to lower unit over-all gear ratio.

Hope that helps.

"Guess what, got on Craigslist.com and found a 1972 volvo inline 6 170 b-30 I'm assuming this is the same as my '73 170 b-30 engine. The guy took it out of his boat in '03 and has been covered and you can turn the engine by hand. Was rebuilt in the early '90's. Is this worth looking at and will it bolt right up? Also $300 a good price."

"Same engine and it will bolt

"Same engine and it will bolt right up. However, what's the engine condition? Remember before you buy that parts for that engine are worth their weight in platinum (provided you can find them).

Not to sound mistrusting, but I know of a few stories of people buying engines that were reportedly "purring like a kitten a couple of weeks ago" and they ended being nothing but a piece of junk. If you search the forum you will come across a few of those stories."
