changing mounting brackets

I have a 1986 mercury 50 hp with a clamp style bracket without tnt. I have a 1986 70 hp that doesn't work, but has a tnt bracket that does work. Can I switch these out? How does the motor attach to the mounting bracket or mounting assembly?
