I acquired an older sterndrive boat this week, I tought it was from the 70's, and then I had to replace the solenoid (of course) and on the old solenoid, there was a stamped date "17 nov 1967" I can hardly believe it. The 2.5 runs smooth I can't wait to try it on the water.
I dropped the gearlube to take the lower drive off, so I could check the water pump (altought it was working!) it's been there for so long so it does not hurt to check. And then I notice, there is no oil passage in that lower drive!!! So I check there is this little rubber/silicone plug where the passage is usually, on the upper drive. I took it off and still no oil would come out, it was quite blocked but I managed to drain it.
So the question is, does anyone know what the said procedure was to fill those upper drive? I have most of the mercruiser manuals but I cannot find one that goes back that far. Should I fill it from that little plug hole (no threads in that hole, it is just as big as the hole in a regular upper) or should I just fill it from the top slowly? It's got two plugs up top, one on each sides.
Just curious to know if someone here owns or has owned one of these, and how they did it. :rolleyes:
