" I changed the impeeler on my 57 evinrude 18hp but it still won't pee When I removed the pump assembly it was only held on by 2 bolts although there are three hole in the lower unit where it fits.I replaced it the same way it came out, if i use 3 bolts to hold it inplace the pump it requires a quarter turn and will not line up with the top unit .is it possible that this is the wrong pump housing or is it more likly the cooling is blocked I did make sure that the water tube was inplace. any suggestions would be appreciated thanks "

"Zapps.... The correct water p

"Zapps.... The correct water pump kit assy for that engine is OMC part #382468 which is attached to the lower unit with three (3) screws.

If this is what you have, and the lower unit has not had a screw broken off in the past and left that way, I don't understand what you're speaking of when you say that you would need to turn the housing 1/4 turn to make it line up to have three (3) screws installed.

Check the lower unit again to see if a broken screw exists where that 3rd screw in the water pump housing would normally line up.

At any rate, the pump will require three screws to keep it securely sealed to the lower unit. Now, a note about sealers:

Any gaskets in that area should be coated with Gasket Sealer (the type that comes in a can that has a small brush in its screw off cap).

Sealer 1000 or OMC Adhesive (same substance) should be used on any metal to metal or metal to plastic surface such as a impeller hsg to plate, or plate to lower unit surface to eliminate air leaks.

A improperly sealed water pump could possibly draw air which would obviously interfere with the water flow pressure.

Thanks Joe your knowledge and

Thanks Joe your knowledge and expierence is greatly appreciated. You are correct that the 3rd screw is infact broken. As for sealing the unit is there a bushing that goes under the pump housing to seal water out of crank case(i don't have one)Does the impeller go in the pump housing which means that there is a big gap under it or is that where the impeeler sits. this is my first attempt at the bottom end of an outboard and I'm not sure the person who had this motor before me was any better at this than me . thanks again jghooked was right - you are great!

"Zapps.... There is a stainles

"Zapps.... There is a stainless steel plate that goes under the water pump impeller housing. The impeller is sandwiched between the housing and the plate. If the plate is missing, there is no way the pump can pull or push water.

The sealing action I am speaking of is not the seal that goes around the driveshaft in the lower unit. I am speaking of having the water pump sealed with a substance so that it can not draw air between the housing or plate and the surface those items are attached to.

A note on sealers follows:

Any gasket, if it exists, associated with the water pump should be coated with Gasket Sealer (the type that comes in a can that has a small brush in its screw off cap).

Sealer 1000 or OMC Adhesive (same substance) should be used on any metal to metal or metal to plastic surface (such as impeller hsg to plate) to eliminate air leaks. This substance may also be found under the mfg name of "Boat Armor" but the tube will always include the "Sealer 1000" logo.

" Zapps,

I did the same work on my motor. When I fired her up she didn't pee. Before I removed the lower unit again I checked the hose from the top of the head. I had salt blockage. Cleaned it out and no problem. "
