I had the 10 tooth pinion brea

I had the 10 tooth pinion break on a LH Rotation engine. Only 1/2 of the pinion was recovered. I think the rest fell into the fly wheel area. Should I be concerned about this? What can I do in the event I need to be concerned?

"YES! You might get lucky with one of these magnets on a long flexible arm. (Don't bother trying to retrieve it with a magnet on a rope!)

Not sure there's a removable plate down there. Try the old five finger X-ray technique and see. Either way that piece has to come out. Imagine the damage it would do if, in a heavy sea, it caught the flywheel teeth and started flying about in there! Yikes.

"There's a plate on the lower, forward end of the bell housing...can't remember if it is 4 or 6 bolts that hold it on. Think there are nuts on the ends, too.

Don't forget the springs in the damper plate, they are great trapping smaller pieces.

The chucks should fall to the bottom, the cocern is if the get bounced/thrown up into the flywheel - that would be ugly. If you get the big pieces out you may be ok.

You need to find out why it broke, too."

Good point. Mark the flywheel

Good point. Mark the flywheel (so you know where you started) then slowly rotate it (with a socket on crank pulley) and inspect all the teeth. And if some are gone....Get out the wrenches.

"Thanks everyone!! Used a japanense finger on a flexable line with a magnet in the end. It took a bit of fishing down into the fly wheel, but I found two small pcs and one large one. Starter fixed and replaced. Engine is barking now! Thanks to the guys at Genset in Oakland, CA. They fixed the bendix and one lever for 60 bucks. Everyone one else tried to say it needed rebuilt."
