This is not intended to be a debate on whether or not I should buy a new exhaust system
I removed the exhaust on one engine to check their condition.
After 5-1/2 seasons they are in great shape.
Even in the tail end ( At the connection with the rubber hose)
Some of the coating is still in tact.
So, I plan to clean them up and run them for a while.
The existing coating on the outside is chipping off in huge chunks.
I'm trying to figure out the following:
What's the background on Mercruiser using Ceramic coating?
I've heard that they might have had problems and stopped.
Any chance I have ceramic coating?
Is it in the water passages?
What was their process, were they dipped and baked?
If it's not ceramic, then what did they use?
Whats the best method to remove the rest? Abrasive blasting (Soda, other media)
What are the options for recoating?
Because I want to put these back on my boat next friday, I don't have time to send them out.
I've heard of Jet Hot or simular ceramic coating. Interesting and expensive, but Maybe over the winter.
My hope is to learn what I can.
By the way: I have the 3 point drain system. At the bottom of the manifold, there is a fitting that has some kind of check ball / valve in it.
What is that for? How does it come apart so I can clean it.
