CDI swap/ No Spark

I believe my CDI went on my j20crcos/1985.I have a j10rccd/1988 that runs great and looking at part numbers I think this is a direct swap.At home and trying to get spark on my gap tester and can't see any set just about 7/16th", but hard pulling this 20 and see spark at the same time.Pulled wires off lanyard sw.No go_Ohmed out stator and coils and they are in specs according to CDI.Just wanted a second or so opinion before doing it.I finally got this motor out for a fishing trip after getting things ready this spring and all seemed to run well.Got it on the river and things seemed good.Took my time feeling it out and took off and was achieving 25mph in 14ft jon. When I slowed down for the last time to fish it started missing badley and stalled.Almost got it started acouple times when it fired once and even swapped new plugs in and a good known used set.Engine flooding of course too from all the pulling.

Think I fixed it!After posting I thought about things and realized I did not check the ground wire off the CDI.Put a meter on the connector and to another ground and did not have continuity!Took bolt that holds CDI and ground to block out and cleaned things up.Why they paint these areas is beyond me.Hooked things up and pulled cord and saw spark right away.Did it acouple times then the wife came she was able to watch also and pull acouple times.Needless to say it fired up first pull!Unreal that it just crapped out of course after heading down river and running well all times prior.Hopefully that won't happen again.Spark may have been weak also prior, but it ran before. Thanks

Check those grounds for corrosion every year as normal maintenance, yearly. A little dielectric grease can't hurt on those connections
