J200STLESE (1990) Was towing a ski-doo back(brokedown)after about 6 miles then suddenly my engine shut down and smoke pouring out from CDI box and this sticky gooey stuff all over manifold. It will still run but box gets real hot didn't want to burn anything else up
  1. Whats the best stuff to use to get this stuff off
  2. What causes the box to burn-up like that
  3. Is this the only problem I am facing or is there other circumstances surrounding this dilema
 ThanKs

Re: CDI Burnt up

It's more common for a stator to melt, but pretty much any electronic component can.

Anything from an bad diode or capacitor, toasted switch, bad winding or another component in the system sending too much power (because it went defective).

In a case such as this you really should have the entire ignition checked out. Simply replacing the box could lead you to another melt-down in short order.

For example, maybe the regulator/rectifier is actually the component that went first. That took out the stator since the power it was trying to send to the regulator "backed up" into the charge coils which overheated and took out ignition bobbins which then started throwing wild voltage that caused the powerpack to melt.

So maybe it was just a bad capacitor in the box or maybe that's just a symptom of a much deeper issue.

Re: CDI Burnt up

Thanks for the info come to find out after I took the Power Pack off much deeper issue just like you said the timer plugs melted and fussed together it must have arc'd and melted the alluminum part that the wires routed through but just on the one bank ...strange I thought well anyway looking at about a grand in new parts need too find some cheap parts .....any Ideas?

Re: CDI Burnt up

Be sure to replace the regulator, and replace the engine harness if you can afford it why screw around with the possibility of faulty wiring? A faulty regulator in some cases can be the reason for the melt down also.
I personally install a el chipo gauge with a needle specifically to monitor my charging system, It gives you a clear visual if something is amiss like a faulty battery discharging at WOT, fluctuating needle indicative of a regulator acting up etc...

Re: CDI Burnt up

Check out Ebay. I bought a regulator/ harness from a blown 1990 225 on there for $50, including shipping. The seller sent me the wiring harness, powerpak, regulator, stator, timer base, and even the top cap and bearing from the block. Everything clean and decent looking.

Re: CDI Burnt up

Stator insulation gets pretty marginal after time. From what you desribe, I'll bet you had a bare wire rubbing the aluminimun holder until it made contact. For affordable replacements, you may want to try a marine salvage yard in your area. The local boat trader magazines usually have several that advertise in the back.
