CD2 USL Conversion Kit 1988 28hp

Hello Everyone-

I've got a 1988 Evinrude 28hp. Has anyone out there installed a CD2 USL Conversion Kit (New coil, switch box, etc.)? I'm curious how you ran the new wires under the fly wheel. I'm not real sure how to route them and of course, the instructions are pretty useless. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If not, does anyone know of any good websites that have detailed engine and wiring pictures? I may be able to just look at a converted engine picture and figure it out (especially if the flywheel is removed).

Thanks,

Ryan

Re: CD2 USL Conversion Kit

That kit is intended for the engines using the UFI (powerpack under flywheel) ignition system that wants to convert to the 'old' reliable version.
Your engine, according to the BRP catalog, seems to have the 'normal' one with external powerpack.
If so, why change?

Re: CD2 USL Conversion Kit

I am moving the power pack from under the flywheel to an external one. The kit came with a new coil and CDI sensor that are remaining under the flywheel. Those are the wires I need help routing from under the flywheel to the external powerpack.

Thanks,

Ryan

Re: CD2 USL Conversion Kit

89 was first mod that had the PP under the flywheel.
From what I see from the kit, you have to remove the old PP and sensor coil and replace the charge coil .
The PP should mount on the rear of cylinder on port side.
From what I can see from the enlarged pic:

The new wires color matches the old ones.
The wires are routed out the same way as the old ones using the same brackets/plates to keep them from chafing.
Pics on this site should give an idea:

Re: CD2 USL Conversion Kit

Huh, Maybe I have an 89 then. I was just getting the year out of the owners manual that came with the boat / motor. Anyhow, thanks for the response and pics, but I was really looking for some pics with the flywheel removed so I can see how the wires are run there. I don't think I'll have any problems running them once I get them out from under the flywheel.

Also, not real sure which way to mount the new coil. With wires facing in or out. Facing in, they get crushed under the coil itself. Facing out, they will be really close to the spinning flywheel. Pic 001 is facing in, Pic 002 is facing out.

Thanks Again

Re: CD2 USL Conversion Kit

I found a way to mount the coil, wires in, without to much binding, so I think I'll do that and then just use small wire ties around them and run them along the under side of the flywheel, under the other coils. We'll see, I guess.

Re: CD2 USL Conversion Kit

Hi all,

New to the site but have 1990 ish 30hp electric start with a similar issue, having gone through my second CD2 pack in 3 years im going for the conversion.

One question though are they more reliable and less prone to falling apart, as both of mine have lost the metalic pickup points on the outer edge of the pack.

Please respond as dont want to bin the engine as the rest is really good, just cant keep on justifying paying out for the cd2 pack all the time

Every time I 'scrapped a 2-cyl (20 - 35)with 'old' external PP, I took the first opportunity to replace a UFI system.
You may go for a new conversion kit, or simply take a complete system from an 'old one. Even an original 83 powerpack is more reliable than a brand new UFI unit!!
