CD unit is worn by flywheel

I have a 1991 15 hp Evinrude model E15EEIA. I replaced a defective CD unit last year. Today I took the flywheel off for an unrelated issue and found that the metal piece extending out of the CD unit had been busted off by the flywheel. I disassembled the original CD unit and discovered the metal is actually a core to a coil. I believe this coil must activate the trigger circuit. Believe it or not the engine still runs fine however I am going to replace the CD unit again. I thought the problem was probally bad bearings causing the flywheel to wobble but I can not move the shaft at all. Has anyone had this problem before or have a better solution other than filing down the metal piece so it is flush?

That is a possibility I will know in a few days when the new one arrives. If the metal is flush then it definitely was a bad CD unit. If the metal is sticking out again, I'm filing it down before I install it. The metal just serves as an iron core in a coil. A little less metal should not make a difference.

There is a little wobble. I couldn't see it with the flywheel off but with the flywheel on tonight I could see it. I assume the wobble took out the CD unit.

Thanks

I didn't realize there was an upgrade available for the small engines. I will have to remember that next time I change it. Thanks for the info.
