"about a year ago I had my 48hp outboard motor, 89, Johnson, carburator rebuilt. After it sat through the winter it would no longer
idle, so we took it apart and cleaned it, after cleaning it now runs well but a lot of gas spews out the top carburator. any suggestions
on how do fix this?"

"Dismantle that carburetor and re-set the float as follows:

(Carburetor Float Setting)
(J. Reeves)

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

"further info on the 48 hp, Johnson, with the carb upside down, I cannot blow into the fuel inlet, indicating the float has shut off fuel, with the carb right side up, I can blow through the carb, yet it seems to dribble fuel out the atmospheric vent in the top of the air intake .....we also found a piece of wood stuck into that hole by a previous "mechanic"...is there a specific float drop dimension we should aim for, it acts like the fuel level is too high in the bowl...thanks for the help"
