carburetor fuel spitback.

motor is a 96 E6RED 6HP. Had oil coming out of air box on front of carb. There seemed to be a lot of oil sprayed around inside the motor cover. Removed and inspected Leaf Plate per fuel system trouble check chart. One set of reeds or leaf valves are sitting tightly against the surface of the leaf plate, other side is slightly open to a point where you can see light at ends of that set of reeds. The opening is about a 1/16 of an inch. My question is, are the reeds supposed to be tightly seated against the reed plate? Motor was great at high throttle; but was running rough at low idle speeds.

Just looked at parts diagram, I see the Leaf plate has a small check valve built into it. could this be my source of the oil in air box.

It could be as I think that is part of the oil recirculation system which is supposed to let excess fuel out of the crank case when idling.

Thanks Boobie.
I did a quick check air flow test of the check valve and it seats and closes ok. What did you think about the slight gap at the ends of one set of leaf valves?

downloaded manual today. checked for warped leaf plate, which was within specs. Check valve tested ok, reed valves or leaf valves were not nicked warped or damage in any way. Anybody got any ideas where all that oil that was in air box came from? Have ordered new gaskets and will reassemble the motor for another test run. Anybody have any ideas how where all this oil came from which was all over the inside of the engine cover and in the air box?

Did you have the motor tilted up for an extended period of time ?? Is the seal between the air box and the carb ??

normally motor is stored in shed on engine stand. Had been in key West this winter, when not in use there, motor was store in truck carb side up. both carb nuts were tight and both gaskets were in place. When mixing up new tank of gas, I use measuring cup made marked for oil to gas ratio. 50 to 1.

All I can say is clean the motor up real good and then run it and see if you can see where it's coming from.
