Carburetor fuel leak

Carburetor 4bbl -Quadrajet- 4 bolt - is leaking fuel on both sides In the middle of new Carburetor and base gasket - have tried 3 gaskets - tighten in a cross pattern
Leaking after l poured gas down the carb. How tight does one tighten the nuts and bolts

I got the new gasket and it is wrong - way to thick - the bolts are too short
The Carb 17059292 is a marine carb but I cannot find a part # for the correct gasket - not even listed in mercury Parts cataloque
Am I dealing with an automotive gasket or could l use the old gasket and make one -

l use a small funnel when filling the carb gas goes straight in

took the carb back to the mechanic he informed me that it was leaking from the throttle plate shaft - when l poured gas down, the throttle plate was closed and then gas flows out through the shaft bushing - This only happened because the plate was closed - This would ever happen under normal operating conditions.
new accelerator pump installed - good gas squirting - new choke pull off installed.

my only concern now is the float - when he took the top plate off the float was right at the top - he had put some gas into the bowl - to test the a/c pump ,but still with the float right at the top it will shut off anymore gas from entering the bowl. - never thought to ask him about that
am l right or wrong
