"Now that the top ends of the

"Now that the top ends of the engines are back in shape, I do have one annoying little problem between port and starboard. Starboard alway JUST starts right up as if it were fuel injected and 16 years newer, even after sitting 10 days or so. The PORT side always needed a few pumps of the throttle but now that the rebuild is there, only about 3/4 of one pump.

Additionally, the starboard runs smoothly at around 725: PORT takes a stall or a quick throttle bump to wake up and then needs to idle around 950 for 30-40 seconds before getting with the other engine.

I have rebuilt 1 carb and it is on the starboard (good) side. It was a kit that was mostly gaskets and a small spring/bb check valve type thing under the spray bar and a new accel pump.

Not a difficult job other than removing the old tiny glued gaskets. The two mixture screws probably play a large roll in this problem as well but I am UNABLE to discover the best method (so Far) of adjusting them beyond stall and recovery.
Am I losing fuel during the week in a flow back situation? I don't think it is that either as I have a fully loaded(fuel) Racor same height as the carb and 3 feet away. from there it goes to the fuel pump and then along the bilge to a bulkhead mounted canister opposite the fuel tank.

I dont THINK the other carb warrants a rebuild but would certainly do it after all of this UNLESS there is some thought lurking out there that I am certainly overlooking."

"the thing with the old carbs

"the thing with the old carbs is they get gummed up, and its not getting the flow through the ports that it needs. as far as the mixture screws, generally you screw them in to the point of stalling and then back them off. As long as the idle does settle down, I'd live with it until summers over or it gets worse, then rebuild it. Just for kicks, make sure the filter on that carb is clean."

"Al, from the crusader manual:

"Al, from the crusader manual:
"turn idle mix screws in slowly, one at a time, util engine RPM drops off, back off mixture screw until engine RPM again drops off. Correct mixture adjustment is halfway between these points. Repeat with other idle mixture screw."
beyond that, its sort of playing with it, I hope that helps more than not...."

"OK...guys, thanks. I will go

"OK...guys, thanks. I will go at it again...Occasionally, i read something but my brain output is a bit different EVEN THOUGH I swear I did every thing word for word...Ever do that?"

"I would think they are , Jeff

"I would think they are , Jeff. It only says 9780S on the base BUT every manual I have for the Edelbrock 1409 looks to be the same thing."

"Rats! I was afraid of that.

"Rats! I was afraid of that. I had one that was porous and would flood no matter what. With an aluminum body, the "evil-nol" in our fuel eats those old things up.

Jeff"

I am guessing that you would n

I am guessing that you would not recommend going back to the Rochester carbs? Then I am guessing you may not like the Edelbrock carbs for that same aluminum reason? So now what?

Are we suggesting just that newer carbs will work better until the ethanol eats them up in a few short years?

"Hey Al, I replaced my rochest

"Hey Al, I replaced my rochester 2 years ago, and i would swear the thing is brass, not aluminium. Maybe its the marine spec and not the auto. I did spend a lot of time trying to rebuild the old one, If I consider my time as money, it would have been cheaper getting the new one right away. Granted, it was 22 year old and had been sitting for 2 years, ..."

"E... These carbs are not too

"E... These carbs are not too tough to rebuild. I did the 1st one in about 2 hours BUT...IF THE METAL is being erroded away, no rebuild in the world is gonna work. I think I am going to switch carbs tonight and see IF that does anything.

My carbs are probably 12 years old but Whenever I was able to use a new carb in the past...It was a real easy job. My problem was : You really ain't finding any new 1930's Linkert carbs boppin around !
