carbureator question it's a easy one too?

1993 Johnson (J40TLETF) 40HP my question is I'm doing a carb re-build I've bought the kits and found bent needle valve Ordered one of those also.Question when you remove the bowl there is a brass shaft that comes from top of carb there are three holes in the side and another brass shaft running through it my question is its not straight up and down on both carbs they was to the side a good bit is this a problem and do they come out so I can order new ones if needed I didnt see them on any parts diagram from MArine engines .com parts should be in soon I need to get her back together and running Thanks Mitch
 
thanks alot .I got the boat for a great deal and even if the motor was locked up still a great deal thanks alot for the info I'm going to start rebuilding the carbs tomorrow I had to order a slow speed screw today as it was bent when I took them apart.Since I took every thing apart and I didnt spend alot on the boat I'm taking out the VRO and putting in new pump new water pump filter and carb kits,new tires Ill be so ready to take it by Tuesday when screw gets in.But any way thanks so much
 
One more question about carbs .When installing the float how do I know its set at the right height?when held like its going to sit in the boat with the bowl off its suppose to look like its flat?or level if you will?
 
With the carb upright (the position you speak) it should go down.To check it turn it upside down the float should be level with the bowl.I seldom have to set a new float, when I think of it Never had to reset a new float.
 
well i'll give it a try.I'm still waiting on parts I figured I'd get as much done as I can before they get in.Thanks alot for info DEW
 
Haight ey dew all parts came in today.Carbs are re-built and ready to install since I had the extra money I decided to get rid of the VRO put a regular fuel pump on I saw a picture on this or another forum and now I can't find it I need to know the line coming in from the tank does it run straight to the fuel filteror where Like I said I saw a pic of 2 differant engines one with vro and one without pic is worht thousand words to me I need really to know what goes to what in order and do I need a differant splitter to go to the carbs after the pump and filter? alot of words may not make sence to you
