I have recieved a couple of qu

I have recieved a couple of quotes from marine mechanics to rebuild my carbs. One mechanic quoted twice what the other two quoted me and his reason was that the carbs had to be synced with each other. Is he pulling my leg?

I have only motorcycle experience as a mechanic BUT, I did rebuild BOTH of my 454 engines and carbs...NEVER sync'ed any of 'em. My boat runs GREAT. Adjusted each carb to the engine it was mounted on and fine tuned it as we ran out each time. My carbs are Carter AFB's and appear to be identical to the Edelbrock 1409's. My 2 cents!"

He is pulling more than your leg - one can sync certain multiple carbs on the same engine; not on separate engines.

Thanks fellows! Any reason my auto mechanic could not rebuild them for me. Is it not the same carb that would come in an automobile?

"The basic carb is the same but has had a couple mods to meet the marine safety requirements.

the auto mech may have the capability to do the job but not the tech data...Most every marine carb I've looked up "the specs' for never appear in the auto data sources. As long as he can get to the correct specification listing, he should be fine. Remember, if he's off, the inefficiency will come out of you wallet. Same applies for getting the correct rebuild kit."

"You can do the best to tune your carbs so that they perform just about the same but no two will act alike. Too many variables can come into play, the needle valves, the valve seats, the float adjustments, linkage and choke adjustments can all alter the idle and running RPM. The only sync you need is a gauge to help you adjust the throttle on the twins to compensate for differences, but as for tuning them to full sync., I agree with the other guys here...find a truthful mechanic. Twofold, a rebuild carburator is only as good as the rebuilder and the tools he has to work with. You can pick a mechanic who works out of his garage with one set of Craftsman tools or purchase a well re-built carb (or have yours rebuilt) from a reputable source who has up-to-date equipment to fine tune the carburator, individually, as needed. Next engine....go for MPI's."

"I have had my Rochester Quadrajets rebuilt by a shop that specializes in rebuilding carbs and especially marine carbs. My recommendation is that for a few dollars more, you can get it done right. I am sure there are generalist who can do the job. When I have a heart problem, I like to have a heart doctor take care of it. Of course if it is an emergency you need to get care from where ever you can, perferrably from yourself.

17082403 and under that number was 1196. What does this tell me?

This is the company I used. T

This is the company I used. They have rebuilt 4 Quadrajets for me. I am completely satisfied with their work. They are a few bucks more expensive than others I have seen on line but their work is great. If you have two done at the same time they offer a discount. You should ask them. They also supply the gasket you need to remount the carb.

"Ccollins: Those are the carb numbers. The first designates the 'model' and application of the carb, the second denotes the julian date it was made (april 1986). The main use of the 170...number is to make sure you get the correct rebuild kit. Unless you have access to the rochester (or delco) manual, they won't do you much more.

Be aware that most all info you will find on quadrajet model numbers, on the internet, really doesn't apply to the marine applications."

Thanks Chuck Hanson. I sent off an email to them last night and recieved a quote to reman them for nearly $600 for the pair.
 
The quote they gave me two yea

The quote they gave me two years ago was $259 - to $298 for one. When they finished the cost was $250. I guess the price has gone up since then like everything else.

"national Carburetors in Jacksonvill FL does a fine job, First one I sent them was about 1.5yrs ago. Came back perfect, they do all the upgrades and fix the inherent defencts. I just took deliver of the second one this week. Dut to time I did not send them the old one as there is no difference in price. with shipping it was 279.00. I got it within one week of ordering it.

They have a website, recommend looking them up and calling them."
