Carb Question

Working on a Johnson 40hp J40PLEEA. Was thinking about rebuilding the carbs and noticed they are different than the ones my manual shows. They are OMC 432439. My parts manual shows they should be OMC 439458. The major difference I see is mine doesn't have the carb cover (part #2) shown in the diagram. I'm assuming someone may have changed them. I did a parts search on this site and 432439 doesn't come up. Appreciate any help.

You may have 50 hp carbs or a changed powerhead. Or somebody simply swapped carbs. Do either of the carbs have a metal tab on the float bowl. That will usually have a part # on if.

439458 is a carburetor part number.
432439 is a factory run casting number of no consequence.

The metal tab that Scott mentions which is attached at the factory to the float chamber would be the only way to obtain the part number other than closely matching ones carburetor to the parts manual.

Why some mechanics feel it is too much trouble to reattach that ID Tab will remain a mystery.

On this site... a time consuming search... BUT... you could go thru the exploded views of the various carburetors (years, hp's, etc) until you come up with a match.

Also, pertaining to the powerhead... the cylinder head will have a embossed (raised) part number either somewhere on its side between the cylinders... OR... in a small circular form near the top face portion. That number could reveal some information that may help.

I think your carb is early 93, in late 93 they went to that cover plate. If you get a kit for early 93 or 92, you should be okay.

No metal tags on either carb. I checked out the '93 early diagram and I think Timguy nailed it. I'm guessing someone in the last 20 years changed out the carbs. I also checked out the carb kits and it lists the same kit 396701 for the '93 and '99 carbs.
Thanks for all your comments.
