Carb problem? 1976 302

1976 302, 888 with a 2 jet Rochester. Just took the boat out after three years. Had to replace the points and condenser. Went over the carb a little jets seemed clean and needle and set looked okay, did replace the accelerate pump.

Problem: From an idle to full throttle it dies, just cuts out, don't spit or sputter or anything. It otherwise runs greats, from half throttle to full quickly no problem or slowly accelerating from idle to full throttle it's fine. So to me it sounds like a fuel problem not real sure. Need a direction and some suggestions.

Thanks Brian

Re: Carb problem?

if it sat for three years, did it sit with fuel in the tank?def replace fuel and what i did to get mine running after sitting for longer was I took the carb off, rebuilt(which is easy) and when I put it back on put a little sea foam in the carb, oil and fuel tank. good luck

Re: Carb problem?

Is the accelerator pump giving a good prolonged raw fuel shot when coming off idle circuit?

Re: Carb problem?

I will have to re-check, it is a new pump and it is pushing fuel, but not sure if it is a long steady stream. It almost seems like it is starving for fuel? Will check and get back to you. I am not much of a carb person but have the basics down fairly well.
Thanks Bert

did you drain the fuel before running this engine ? the fuel is 3yrs old in tank ? the fuel was treated with stabilizer 3yrs ago prior to storage ?

drain some fuel out of tank see if water is in the fuel ...

Re: Carb problem?

Drained the fuel tank & carb all fresh gas. Looks likes its getting a full stroke of fuel from the accelerator pump. Going to check the fuel pump pressure, not sure what it should be though but guessing 4-6 #.

Re: Carb problem?

yes dean you got it right 4-6 no less. me i would go thru the carb again, soak it again, make sure every pasage is clean. You did replace the ball bearing. I would raise the float a tad, maybe the float is too low. Dist maybe ? You checked the points ? Sanded them ?

But me i would run the motor off a external tank of clean fresh fuel. Clean the filter again that is in the fitting that enters the carb. Remove the bell off the fuel pump and clean that filter. Then run a clean new hose from the external tank straight to the fuel pump.

If your problem is fixed good if not , and you went thru the dist. and know thats good, then i would do a compression, and vacuum test.
