Idle mixture screws are turned very slowly in either direction in order to smooth the idle. Most carb rebuilds start with the screw turned inward gently until resistance is felt then backed out counter clockwise (CCW) 1.25 turns. Slowly turn CW until the idle begins to become rough...note the screw position as if the slot was the dial on a clock...then turn it CCW until the idle smooths. Now continue past that point to where it begins to become rough again and note that position as before. Now turn the screw CW to a point 1/2 way between the two stumble points. Leave a 4 stroke engine screw at that position. If a 2 stroke engine turn the screw 1/2 turn CCW to richen the mixture.
