Hi, For years I have kept my 68 650 set up and it does what is supposed to do. I am working a 69 650 and I use the giant Mercury service manual and an aftermarket manual. One thing I have never understood and need clarification on is this. FYI this lightening energizer ignition. The 68 and 69 are pretty much the same. The manuals state.
Fire up the engine and in forward gear turn the driver to "full retard" and set the idle to 550 to 600
I have always put the driver against the stop screw and turned the screw until I got 550 to 600. It I try and retard? ie turn the distributor further clockwise the engine loses RPM and sounds like it is choking. Am I really supposes to turn clockwise all the way?
I have taken pictures of what the screws look like ie number of threads showing on my other 69 and 68 and ones I see online
