Cant I simply swap lower units

"The non-running Merc is seria

"The non-running Merc is serial # 2480805, is a short shaft and the origanol motor that came with the boat.
The replacement motor is serial # 3370315.(can you please tell me the year of this motor and any other info, thank you)
Both of these motors are 115 hp I6 powerheads, very simular behind the cowl. Couldn't I just swap lower units? Or is the jack plates still the better choice? Thanks, MIKE"

"hey JB, I took a look at that

"hey JB, I took a look at that websight. Alot of great information, thanks. But I still had trouble finding the answer. I entered the information for both motors and I tried to compare the diagrams. But I'm not sure if the diagrams were exactly what Im working with, which leaves a bit of uncertianty. What I have is a '68 1100ss (short shaft) and a '73 1150 (long shaft). The '68 turns over but wont fire. Looks like multiple problems. Graham sugested the jack plates and just raise the motor up. But I was just thinking sense I have the parts, I could just switch the lower units and the motor will sit in the original position. That is if they are compatable. I want to take it apart to see but figured I'd better seek profesional advice before I make a costly mistake. Thanks for the help, Mike"

"when going from a long to sho

"when going from a long to short or the other way there are many parts that are different. The mid section is different, the casting is longer or shorter. This requires a different exhaust stack, different water tube, different drive shaft, different shift shaft. You cann't just change the lower to make it a different length, the mid section along with those parts must go, it would be easier to change the powerhead, if it would fit. Even easier to fix the one you have, unless its shot"
