Can't get outdrive reinstalled 89 OMC King Cobra

I removed my outdrive for service and to replace a screw on the passager side of unit, ( I have on earthly idea what that screw is for) now I cannot get unit back on. I think a motor cycle jack will convert easily to a sterndrive jack but a shop said the motor could be out of alignment. Any thoughts and how likely is the motor to be out of alignment. I ad two guys helping me hold the unit as we tried to get it on.

OMC's don't need to be in gear at the throttle. SORRY THIS ALL RUNS TOGETHER, some bug's got in and causing this?? Get an alignment tool, just to be sure it's right. Then, I use a 2ft 4x4 or enough blocks to raise it up so it's level. Then before you try to install. Clean the splines and the o-rings. The grease under the o-rings can lift the o-rings up and cause a locking situation. Clean all the greasefrom the o-ring area and install new o-rings and grease the outside making sure none gets under the o-rings.You'd need a 10# sledge to get past the o-rings if they have too much grease.. The drive on the blocks and shift it into gear. The shift rod, lift it up. Then as you push the drive in reach down on the right and pull up on the prop blade. This will spin the shaft and rotate it so the splines can mesh. Oh yea clean the gimbal bearing, too much grease can cause a problem. The screw was a casting plug. Some designer, engineer thought it's be ok to just cover it with a cool sticker and no one would ever see it under the sticker. Yet why would anyone undo a screw that they had no idea what it was for:)Your not alone, THOUSANDS have removed it:)

Sorry, I had a 2.3 OMC and had the outdrive off several times, then I bought A mercrusier. Got confused on thi king the omc had to be in forward also.
