hi i just put a new gimbal bearing on my 89 cobia ( 2.5L mercruiser alpha one)... i cant get it to go back together.. the drive shaft went into back side of engine fine, there is an inch big gap tho.. i hit it a few times with a block of wood and it moved some and then just stopped.. i can still turn the propeller both ways which makes me think something is wrong.. PLEASE HELP anything will be appreciated.. thanks in advance

Re: cant get outdrive back on

STOP BANGING IT, IT SHOULD ALMOST PUSH ON BY HAND
Control box in FWD, outdrive in FWD
A new bearing does not always line up perfectly. Try moving it around in the housing,up,down, left, right, etc. with the alignment bar. Why its called a "gimbal bearing" it moves around .Then if necessary adjust the engine alignment.

Re: cant get outdrive back on

no i didnt use an alignment tool but i will get one.. when i would tighten some of the bolts the drive was like binded up.. it wouldnt fall freely if that makes sense, it was stiff... ill try the alignment tool and see how that works... i was thinkin i had the wrong bearing...should i put the bearing on the shaft first or in the housing?

With that type of answer you need to go here first and download your manual.
Merc Manuals
The gimbal bearing is driven in untill it stops. There a pic that shows a fully seated one. Then use the alignment bar to "center" the bearing to the coupler. If the drive came off easily it goes on the same way.Use the bar to move the bearing around in it`s housing .If that still dosent work then engine alignment is suspect and must be corrected. You could just slam the drive on but you will be pulling the motor very shortly to replace the engine coupler.
