Engine is a 1983 Johson 35 HP

Engine is a 1983 Johson 35 HP long shaft. Engine is a tiller setup with thru hub exhaust (not the old style).

I was trying to pull my lower unit to replace the water pump yesterday with no luck... Am I missing something? Here is what I did:

1.) Removed screens and disconnected shift linkage.
2.) Removed 4 bolts going into bottom of motor shaft.
3.) Removed nut and washer from top of motor shaft.

The stud sticking up through the lower motor shaft looked a little corroded but not too bad. I soaked the thing with some Blaster and could get it to wiggle but it would not drop down more than about 1/8" in the rear and was still a little tight in the front.

Does anyone have any advise on seperating the lower unit from the engine without damaging anything?

"After disconnecting the shift

"After disconnecting the shift lionkage in back of the water intake screens, did you remove the plastic "V" shaped retainer from the shift rod? If not, do so. Pay attention as to which way the small end of that plastic retainer is facing."

"Joe,

I was unaware of this

"Joe,

I was unaware of this. In the diagram above are you talking about part #71?

Using the diagram above I removed 4 bolts (#73), 1 nut and 1 washer (#'s 54 and 53), removed 2 intake screens and 4 screws (#'s29 and 26) and disconnected 2 rods (#'s 49 and 66).

According to the above diagram it should slide out. I have done this before on other engines. Never on this particular engine. Is the "retainer you speak of in between the rod connection? And if so is this holding the unit on? I'm having a hard time visuallizing it.

Regards,

AJ"

"Slide the shift rod retaining

"Slide the shift rod retaining nut up, the plastic sleeve is right there. It is what keeps the nut from falling off.... and the lower unit can't drop away with that but there.

The number? Yes, 71."
