"for some reason, between last outing & this one, i lost 1500rpm & 10-12mph - everything looks & sounds fine except for the performance??? Fuel filter or ?????"

"Trouble shooting starts with

"Trouble shooting starts with a compression test, followed by a spark check.----spark must jump a gap of 7/16" on each cylinder. There is no point in starting anywhere else to diagnose this motor."

could it be elevation? it ran

could it be elevation? it ran fine at one lake for a month then took it to another lake that was 1000 feet higher in elevation? i will still do a compression test i was just curious... thanks

"1000 feet of elevation should

"1000 feet of elevation should not make that much of a diffence - if you went for sea level to 5000 feet, that you would probably notice the motor getting a little air starved.

So, start with the fuel system (if your compression and spark are good) - old gas? crud in the tank blocking the pick-up? faulty gas vent? air leak in the fuel line? crud in the fuel filter? water in the gas? collapsed fuel line? etc..."

"Sea level does play a role in

"Sea level does play a role in any engine operation due to higher elevations having less oxygen in the air. Same applies to temperature, hotter = less oxygen in air.
Remember when people go mtn climbing it is harder for them to breath!
Carbs are jetted for a specific elevation range and if you take it to a different elevation there will be a difference in performance. The mount of elevation change of course will make things more noticeable.

Make sure you check your fuel filter as a restriction in fuel will limit your engine operation."
