I have a 79 Silverton with 318's my port engine steams but runs 160 at the dock under load it overheats. It has new manifolds risers installed last year at end of season for steam problem steam slowd but came back with the over heating this season. I put a new seawater pump on thinking circulation but still over heat,s we're talking hot. no white or blue smoke at all, just steam. any suggestions? What if I bypass the gear box cooler?

FWCooled? If so, clean out the heat exchanger, refill with coolant and "burp" it.

RWCooled? Look for air leaks before the pump (and with FWCooled as well).

If all else fails you try a raw water pump flow test: Unhook the hose after tne raw water pump and aim it where it won't bother anything, then fire the motor up. (At idle, they pump very little water.) Compare flow from both engines.

THANKS JEFF
If I take the hoses off the port side of the port engine which feeds the manifold the pressure is pretty strong and that side of the engine does more of the steaming. if the exchanger is constricted would I get that kind of pressure? Its equal to the pressure out of the starboard engine.
Thank you for responding.
I appreciate all the input...

Possibly. Keep digging and you'll find it.

Nice to have another enigine to compare things to! Makes troubleshooting easier.

Did you check your thru hull fittings while it was out of the water? I had whole oysters growing under the intake screens. Poke a srewdriver up there and make sure all is clear.
